Art and Design at West Lodge on Film
“It was our second year at Milne Graden, staying in both North Lodge and West Lodge. The perfect holiday location for rest and restoration. We are already planning next years visit.”

In the latest of our Art and Design film series, we feature Milne Graden’s original gate house, West Lodge. Built by Admiral Milne to match the main house, West Lodge is a stylish period property, ideal for couples seeking a country escape with their dog. Part of our Meadow’s Edge series, the holiday cottage benefits from a wonderfully secluded setting with mature woodland to the side and open fields at the back.
Completely revamped for the 2019 season, the West Lodge interior embodies our signature soft country style. As with all our holiday homes, we have taken inspiration from our idyllic location on the banks of the Tweed.
The dreamy Farrow and Ball Light Blue sets the mood for relaxation in the lounge. Here, guests can settle into the reading corner by the window or sink into the generous linen sofa and gaze out to the trees beyond.
Prints by Emma Lawrenson, provide a fresh modern take on delicate florals and serve as a focal point in the room. The Yorkshire-based artist, has become a firm favourite here at Milne Graden. Emma’s minimal depictions of natural forms in soft colours, echo both our unspoilt river setting and our Retreat, Rest & Revive mantra.
In the bedroom, printmaker Angie Lewin’s “Nature Table” wallpaper adorns the walls, beautifully reflecting the nature surrounding the cottage. We love the collections of sculptural florals, feathers and smooth pebbles depicted in the print – they remind us of the treasures we find on our river walks.
As a team of dog-lovers, we had to include the charming doggy fabrics by Scottish designer Domenica More Gordon as accents in the room. Along with heart-warming sketches by dog portrait artist, Robert Clarke.
The bedroom is finished off with a sumptuously over-sized headboard in delicious biscuit colourway, and complimented by a statement lamp in rustic jute. Throughout the cottage, natural colours, linen and limed oak help to add a coastal element – a nod to our nearby Berwickshire Coastline.
The restful pallet of blues and neutrals continue throughout the interior with the addition of carefully chosen pieces; including sea-blue glass bottles and vases and the Milne Graden staple country check by Chelsea Textiles, in taupe.
Serene blue-green tiles create an air of calm in the kitchen and the double-aspect window is perfectly placed for wildlife watching whilst preparing a meal.
Outside, a generous private garden means there’s plenty outdoor space for four legged friends and the bistro table is perfect for dining al fresco.
Perfect for dog-lovers in search of a restful break, West Lodge is an idyllic cottage retreat on the banks of the River Tweed.
As with all Milne Graden holiday cottages, dogs are more than welcome at West Lodge and we regularly receive a paws up form our canine holiday guests on our doggy feedback cards. Our dog visitors can look forward to a welcome treat bag and exclusive use of our residents only Tails of the Tweed dog park! Woof!
